Produced by Joe Porter with luscious arrangements by Artie Butler and Michael O' Martian, "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)" parked at number one R&B for four weeks and number two pop for two weeks in spring 1973. "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)" was written by Jim Weatherly, who would later pen some of Gladys Knight & the Pips' biggest hits on Buddah Records, including their number one R&B/pop classic "Midnight Train to Georgia." Unlike some of the group's other Motown hits, "Neither One of Us." didn't feature the label's studio band the Funk Brothers instead, the backing tracks were done by Los Angeles-based session musicians. Such an atmosphere had Knight and the Pips anxiously awaiting the date of March 23, 1973, the lapse date of their Motown contract. Even though they had two R&B chart-topping pop hits on the label with "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and "If I Were Your Woman," Knight always felt that they were treated as outsiders. This song is noted for the last line, when Gladys Knight sings the song's title, without saying the word 'Goodbye', right before the song's end.
Released on Decemon Motown's Soul Records imprint as S 35098, it became one of their biggest hit singles to date, and was also the last single the group released prior to them leaving Motown for Buddah Records in February 1973. 21 tracks including 'Neither One of US (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye', 'For Once in My Life', 'Daddy Could Swear I Declare', 'Don't It Make You Feel Guilty', 'All I Need Is Time', 'Only Time You Love Me Is When You. Also includes a total of four bonus sides. The title track, featuring an electric piano, is a forlorn, grown-up ballad. 'Neither One of Us ' is a song recorded by Gladys Knight & the Pips. Neither One of US and All I Need Is Time were both originally released in 1973.
Gladys Knight was outvoted by the Pips when the group was offered a record contract with Motown. Neither One of Us was the quartets last Motown album, and easily their best.
